Seems lots of TV channels have disappeared off http://www.ziln.co.nz like BVN, DWTV etc. No information on the site. Have these gone forever? A shame cause they were free to view with TelstraClear.

Probably couldn't afford to keep them. Does anyone actually watch Ziln? No watchers, no advertising revenue.

I too was just a little sorry to see it drop these channels. I did read something on the site to the effect that they were refocusing their efforts to become more NZ-centric.
I suspect it may not survive......
Sad really.

Do people really think those online TV sites can take up space in the living room, and go mainstream?

If you look at it, you need a full keyboard to operate, and for the living room the best thing is the Media Centre, or Apple TV, or similar "box".

Obviously this could be for those who sit in front of a laptop but wathing "TV" on a small screen, sitting in front of a desk, no sharing with others, bad sound quality is really a bad experience...

I heard a couple of ads on the radio for it, but it didn't really sound appealing...just a localised version of Youtube, isn't it? I think the big drawcard (on the ad I heard, anyway) was that the data was free for Telstra Clear users. That was it.

You obviously haven't visited their site yet then... It's not a YouTube version because they broadcast content that they curate themselves - there's no user generated content on Ziln.

Admittedly, I only had a quick look today, but yes, you're right. However it is just a video TV channel site, right?

Not necessarily a comment on the missing channels, but an interesting update I received from Ziln today:

Notes: Hi, I have read a few comments on Geekzone re the changes in www.Ziln.co.nz recently. A couple of points... we are here to stay and will be rapidly growing VOD channels which are now cheaper than ever to own, plus we have a brand new content management system made by Method Studios of Auckland.

The real cool news is we have a new hosting partner. Web Drive have created a new video content distribution network (CDN) for us which will have POPs overseas and means we are now HD capable.

We have set up the Ziln HD Lab channel for 720p content and all Ziln channels can stream HD. We are looking for HD contributions via the upload funcrtion on the channel so Geekzone HD camera users are welcome to have a go.

quickymart, it seems they are moving to a user-generated content channel too...

And here's the press release:

Ziln partners with Web Drive on new Internet TV content distribution network (CDN)

Ziln, New Zealand's Internet TV network is pleased to announce the relaunch of the Ziln site on Web Drive's new video content distribution network (CDN) offering very fast Ziln video streaming up to HD on a range of connected devices.

“This is a very significant move for Ziln because Web Drive's CDN will take Ziln to the next level of on-line VOD TV delivery and solidly postions our platform to take advantage of the iminent UFB roll out, project Ziln internationally and bring the cost of channel ownership and hi speed HD video streaming delivery way down to well within the ballpark of the new emerging breed of microbroadcasters.” says Paul Brennan GM of Ziln Ltd.

Web Drive’s core business is hosting web content, providing hosting for tens of thousands of New Zealand websites.

“In conjunction with the new partnership with Ziln, Web Drive are announcing their Content Distribution Network or CDN which will mean very fast streaming of Ziln’s video content for users in New Zealand and all around the world. Web Drive is looking forward to helping Ziln grow their audience along with expanding video hosting capabilities and traffic to the thousands of sites we host.” says Neil Webster of Web Drive.

Ziln's new content management system has been designed and built by Eugene Eastlake of Auckland based Method Studios.

“Moving away from the traditional Flash streaming model the new video platform accommodates on-demand video for desktop, mobile and web enabled televisions, allowing us to stream on devices such as the iPhone and iPad,” says Eugene Eastlake, Creative Director of Auckland based digital studio, Method Studios, the design and development team behind Ziln’s new content management system.

“We’ve developed a channel management system that is powerful yet intuitive and simple to use, developing our own pre/post roll and in-video ad serving network. The system is completely modular, allowing us to add functionality and services to the Ziln platform without huge infrastructure changes.”

Ziln has also changed elements of its offering, deciding to focus on VOD delivery of Kiwi content in preference to streaming live international TV feeds which have been deactivated for at least the short term.

“After being on-line for over a year it's clear to us that viewers are most interested in Kiwi VOD content so we have re emphasised that in our attitude and branding and you'll see that in some of the new channels rolling out such as the Tempo Dance and Wild Wellington channels and soon the first 'suburban channel' actually show casing a specific suberb.” Brennan says.

“We've also just launched the Ziln HD Lab channel http://www.ziln.co.nz/channel/zilnhdlab to showcase our HD streaming capability, all video on that channel is 720p and viewers can upload their HD videos to the channel... HD means lounge room and that's exciting.

The Ziln HD Lab Channel seems to play the 720p videos without pausing better than You Tube so that's an improvement. Look forward to seeing more HD videos to play on Ziln.

If they also had HD movies to play that would make Ziln a much more attractive site to visit.

it was nice to have all those overseas channels in one place. Guess i'll just stop using Ziln and go to the respective channel's website.
