Steam.exe    1284    TCP    dets00b    49359    72-165-61-189.dia.static.qwest.net    27030    ESTABLISHED    1    4

I resolved the no data transfer issue between steam and the update servers, it was getting stuck on the initial ip address that it connects too which simcore mentioned should re-direct to another one located in auz. So i tried another modem (dynalink rta 1320)  and i was able to redirect to the correct ip 150.x.x.x and it started updating.

So i thought it may have been my router having some bad configured firewall, i factory reset the original router ( linksys wag120n) and re-configured, still couldn't get past that first ip address which was 72.165.61.190.  So i updated the firmware on that router and i still couldn't re-direct , it would just sit there not transferring any packets.

At this point i was thoroughly confused swearing at my linksys, i then decided to troubleshoot assuming my computer was at fault instead, so i uninstalled netlimiter because i remember reading somewhere it can conflict with steam but this also didn't help. I then moved onto windows firewall, resetting all rules to defaults but still steam was stuck on 0% , with no data transfer.

So i sat there for a while twiddling my thumbs then i remembered on the weekend i changed motherboards, because of the p67 recall and since then i had had this problem loading the interface page of my linksys modem on this computer. All the settings were not showing correctly and it took ages to login, but on my laptop it logged in fine without any problems. I wondered if windows was still using the same ethernet drivers, so i uninstalled my drivers and reinstalled the correct ones for the new motherboard, not sure if the adaptor is any different but this resolved my problem. Steam re-directed to 150.x.x.x and started updating.

What i don't understand is why it worked on my dynalink modem, and whether or not it was purely a coincidence that re-installing my ethernet drivers fixed the problem.  And now i can load the interface properly and quickly for my linksys modem ???

I've now set my download server to be US -Los Angeles and steam updates much quicker :) Cheers Simcore

How did you redirect to the other IP, forced via software? Or did the Dynalink modem just automatically direct you to that when you started Steam?

That is such an insane effort to resolve it, I don't think I would have had your patience so good on you.

We'll look into getting the default server option to direct to something that performs better where possible, I'll keep you up to date via this thread or in a new discussion if necessary.

Cheers for all your info, glad you sorted it out eventually.

Yeah the dynalink modem allowed it to re-direct by itself, still can't explain that. It must have been something to do with my network adaptor talking to the modem without any conflicts, but the linksys modem had some sort of conflict with my network adaptor which was resolved from updating my drivers. The only evidence i have to assume that is because the interface was only partially loading on my desktop while on the laptop it was fine, and i tried three different browsers before i updated the drivers then after it was resolved.

Also i noticed a side effect from choosing US - Los angeles as my download region. On lfd2 it only looked for US servers in the lobby, and only people with US - Los angeles set as their download region could join so there were a lot of annoyed people from the states complaining about high latency lol. Not sure how this would impact other games, lfd2's lobby suffers from being able to choose to search for all servers and arrange them by lowest to highest latency reponse times.

Oh..so that's why I always end up on Aussie L4D2 servers. I had thought it was because there were no NZ servers. Might set my download region back to NZ (when not updating).

For comparison on Telecom with my region set to NZ here's what I'm getting right now.

Both content servers it's downloading from appear to be in the US

Ragnor: Why don't Telstraclear host a steam content mirror?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3326-TDKV-4603

Given you guys host google/youtube and akamai caching servers plus you run general http through a transparent caching proxy... I would have thought this would be a no brainer?

Agreed.. +1

And even better, make it zero rated!

I switched to LA server last night and the update speed greatly increased. Didn't have time to test L$D2 servers though.
