Hi I have sold a phone on trademe and the buyer is asking for the IMEI. This to me isn't usually information you give out to just anyone, I have not received payment for the phone yet. Should I give out this information, or could the buyer be doing something dodgy, then pull out of the deal? Thanks

Personally, I wouldn't send the phone nor any details 'till he has paid.

They might be buying it for XT and wanting to check it has the 850mhz WCDMA band, was it an XT phone? But yeah, wait for payment then send IMEI If it was incorrectly advertised then you'll have to refund them, but otherwise they are legally obliged to go through with the trade I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

It was advertised in the Vodafone section and had a comment that it will work on VDFN / 2degrees. It is not an XT version as it is Vodafone NZ branded. It is pre XT as its a N95 (2100mhz 3g only). Regards

Have you asked them why they want it? What is the TM feedback on them like? It could be they have been burnt before. If they came up with a good reason and had reasonable feedback I'd send it to them if it was me. It's not like they can really do much with the info anyway.

Thanks I have replied to them and asked about that saying it's not something I would usually give out. I will see what the response is and judge it on that. Feedback is: Final rating: 48 - 1 = 47

There are applications on the net that allow you to see if a phone will work on the network (Teleocm XT for instance) which requires the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity). In this case your buyer probably wants to know if it will work on the network they are with but it is always good to ask questions if in doubt. Regards Conor

Buyer possibly wants to check the handset hasn't been blacklisted (various reasons for this) on the carrier they want to connect handset onto. I can recall some customers have found out upon inserting SIM and powering on the handset no connection to the network, due to a seller had backlisted IMEI pre or post sale.

as per above...Buyer probably just wants to check if handset isn't blacklisted...In this case I would give them the IMEI number, and as someone has said earlier, there is nothing much they can do with it.

Might also be wanting to check it's the real deal and not a fake Asian phone with an IMEI shared by a thousand other phones. HTC One X (AOKP Jelly Bean), on 2degrees

I wouldnt buy a used phone without it, and it can be blacklisted way after the sale anyway which IMO makes buying a used phone of any value without proof of ownership too risky. Richard rich.ms

possible if he he want to check if the phone was stolen...coz insurance and police got record of IMEI for stolen phone
