I've had quite a few friends ask me why on earth "Magnum Mac" decided to change their name to Yoobee?

Any ideas?

I'm thinking that somebody in their marketing team thought it was good to have a non-limiting name that allows them to sell a wider range of products? Pity they had to choose a name that imho would be better suited for a chew-toy for a dog 8-).

They did say they'll diverse into more than just Apple products when they rebranded to YooBee.. but no reasoning behind the exact naming of "YooBee". However as MakNZ said, it could be of that marketing ploy of "Who will YooBee?"

I thought it sounded like a japanese or chinese name.

I think they changed from Magnum Mac because there has been some rumors going around that Apple is wanting to launch an official store. I know that may be a false rumor but I was told by the owner of the Yobee Newmarket building in Auckland that Apple wanted to purchase the building but didn't because of the lease agreement.

So Renaissance changed the name to differentiate from the soon to be Apple Store?

Former Renaissance employee, one of many made redundant this year.
In recent years R had aquired Magnum Mac, Natcoll, Student IT, and they have all their existing brands, Insite, Conduit etc etc. The main reason was to make one integrated brand for all products and services. At one point I remember being told that R was running 200+ domain names, and perhaps a dozen 0800 numbers. So the idea is to have one website, one phone number.
Fairly goofy name, IMHO.

Cheers,
Joseph

There was also a fiasco around the branding, they had the new logo and artwork etc all done, then entirely cancelled it, and started again and ended up with the current look. I recall also the board of directors was presented with lots of options of names, and YOOBEE is the one they chose.

I recently heard that when explaining to employees the new branding they said they decided on Yoobee because it was "web 2.0" sounding.

Possibly not accurate, but something I was told.
