sbiddle: You talk about regulation as though it's something needed in the market, when it's something that already eixsts. THE DSL market has been fully regulated for a number of years, IMHO if it wasn't for the fact ADSL was a fully regulated service with pricing and access conditions set by our compeition regulator we would have seen much greater competion years ago. The 46kbps UBA (and theoretically EUBA0) handover dimensioning is a requirement set by none other than the Commerce Commission themselves. Now with these new caps we've just for the EUBA dimensioning to owrry about. If that ever comes into effect it's going to really cause a stir, because it's got the potential to cause a lot of carnage. Steve, first thanks for providing a bit more over sight of the history. I do see what you're saying with respect to regulation tending to cause more problems than solutions or problems down stream that then take a great amount of effort to sort out later. With respect to the 46kbps UBA, what I'm hearing is that the ComCom didn't design regulation that took known growth patterns into consideration. The impression I get is that a bunch of you don't trust the comcom to do anything right or useful and feel they cause more problems than solutions. I don't know if that's right or wrong, it's just the impression I'm getting. I feel that when I made a suggestion based on the information presented I just got laughed. Some of you really know how to take away the joy of a discussion forum. I'm sorry if some of my suggestions seem stupid to some of you who have been in the industry longer than I have. Hi Don, I think I understand where Ragnor is coming from however maybe I can put what he is saying differently as I do pick up from your posts that you are misunderstood and struggling to get your point across. So I am willing to give this another shot. You mentioned in your original post the following: "Do we need to see a massive move from Telecom to the other big 4 or 5 so that everyone is on a more level playing field? But how do we force that? How do we regulate it? It's a great idea, shore up the smaller companies so consumers have a real choice of good providers. " So in a free market, for a myriad of reasons (monetarily, innovatively, sexist, coolest, historic etc etc) a certain company is likely to come out on top or not. Outside the telecommunications industry Cadbury vs Whittakers vs Nestle etc palm oil, cocoa butter etc etc. All different makeups, history, etc competing for your dollar and has varying results. Now the telecommunications industry, has regulation to provide a level playing field (of course debatable like everything) for all companies entering the market to start from so they are not disadvantaged. My question to you, are you saying that despite the percieved level playing ground in this highly regulated market, you would prefer to see all companies (big, small, ugly, good, bad, new, old, competent etc) despite varying factors (budgets, history, capability, drive etc) you would rather pull back those providing a better service already (according to the testing) in order to benefit those smaller players that maybe are not capable to getting there themselves for varying reasons (budget, drive, care factor etc) ? And if that is the case, who do you believe should stump up the cash to bring those smaller players into line? Or are you viewing it more from a technical pov where reducing the performance of Telecom customers to benefit JoeBLoggsISP and improve thier stats ?

insane: Yes Telecom has put a lot of work into their recursive DNS clusters [server clustering, running a fast DNS engine and doing things like re-writing TTLs and caching them for longer than normal....] to ensure their users get the fastest DNS response times, A bit of work not a lot... When i built it there was no monkeying with the TTL to keep them longer, there was to crop verrrry long TTL but only to a given point to make it sane. No server clustering, just plain old asymmetric transparent layer4 load balancing along with a very expensive caching name server application. Robust and very fast but expensive. Not really on topic but there you go a bit of fluff amongst the rest of the noise.

I've got to say that I really enjoy working for Telecom as it's a great place to work. It's a huge improvement from all my prior employers. Lots of people dedicated to giving people the best service we can. I have no qualms recommending XT or broadband as its fast and just works. If things go wrong you can call support and someone answers the phone and sorts your prolem out in a few mins more often than not. I work for Telecom, but as always my views are my own.
