grant_k: Very interesting pictures, thanks for sharing them Phil.

In the shot titled 20120706_142602, I see a stack of white plastic things a little like strangely-shaped dinner plates, and I noticed that there are about 25 of them (presumably one per house). Each one looks like it carries two fibres -- one with a blue sheath and one with an orange sheath. Is this where the splice takes place for each house, or does it serve some other purpose?

 yes your correct this is where my connection is terminated, the fibre is run down the street via the grey plastic ETP and then to the house in one run, there are 3 fibre spices, it is joined here, again at the outside of the house and the final one is done to add the fibre pigtail with the termination inside the house.

Nice improvement in latency for all those gamers out there, which of course is the main driver behind UFB so we can improve the ping times for all those online games where they all cry about getting killed because of the Lag Wink...  up untill Fri this was the DSL from Monday its looking at the Fibre

So lets do a little math here (for fun, I'm not saying these numbers are accurate)

It takes 5 guys 1 day to do one connection.

If we assume there are 1,000 qualified techs in NZ available to do the work, then they can connect houses at the rate of 200 per day?

If we assume they all work 365 days a year then they should be able to connect up around 70,000 houses a year.

So to connect up the 75% of NZ that will be able to get fibre should take?. 17 years!!

Hi Phil, in the last photo you show the new ALU ONT and there also seems to be an older one as supplied to the pilot rollout, I take it those photos are not actually your install.

Watch one, do one, teach one. I would imagine as time goes on, they will have more experience and the installs will happen faster and involve less people.

Plus UFB says they will have the ability for people to connect, not have actually connected everyone. I think if everyone actually got connected they would have an actual problem elsewhere in the infrastructure to worry about :)

Hey guys,
I've been wondering if the fibre is simplex or duplex?  From the photos it looks like there is only a single fibre to the ONT.
I always thought you needed to have a 'Tx' and an 'Rx' (ie: Send and Receive) and hence have dual fibre strands?

Fibre isn't supposed to be coming to my street for another 5 years!  boo-hoo

Thanks in advance;
JASON
