I've found the Seagate Black Armour NAS to be very reliable, if a little more pricey. The 2 bay model is more than your stated price range but again a very good unit.

+1 for Qnap, Else I've also installed a few D-Link DNS-323's. Avoid Netgear Stora, YUK! Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their ADSL broadband network faster. Have you tried to get DLNA to work on your Black Armour? I have one and cant get it to play video files through my Samsung TV no matter what I try.

I have both a D-Link DNS-320 and a 6 bay Freenas server. The DNS-320, which runs a fun-plug mod, has 1x 2TB drive and 1x 1.5TB drive, both WD green drives. My DNS-320 is capable of 30MB/s up and down if your lucky. Mostly sits around the 20MB/s mark. (Not using RAID) My Freenas box has 5x 2TB WD black? drives, and it comfortably sits around the 110MB/s mark for write/up and 80MB/s for read/down. (Using RaidZ2) If your on a budget, and won't get pissed off while waiting for things to download or upload, then go for the DNS-320, it has been quite reliable, although slow for me. Make sure you update it to version 2, as I believe that gives it a speed performance boost too.. Also, be prepared for a performance hit if you use 4K sector hard drives, rather than 512. (Google it) I really hate 4K drives when trying to gain the world speed record... Good luck

Although I used 5900rpm not 5400rpm and didn't use the 4K drives, just two 2TB normal ones But the max I used to get was round 40MB/s I'd take the Netgear stora 2000 over it, or even build a small ITX PC for a similar to price of what the DNS-320 costs new I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.
