I just bought a Technicolor TG582n router on TradeMe for $20. I connected my hard drive to it through USB and was disappointed when I found that only FAT32 formatted drives would work. My hard drive, like most Windows users, is NTFS formatted and I don't intend to embark on the massive task of reformatting it.

I am now looking at Vodafone hg556a to try and get my NTFS drive to work. Will it? Are there other routers out there that can do it - share NTFS content simulating a NAS?

I'm after a cheap solution here - $20-30.

Any advice appreciated!
Alex

You get what you pay for.

FritzBox is a pretty sweet router. Does all your telephony as well as NAS, VPN server, FTP etc.

However for cheap, Netcomm's do alright on the NAS side of things. Have used NTFS drives on the newish black ones - still called NB6 I think. Still don't really like it though. Can't beat a proper NAS!

Add a zero on to the end of your budget an there are lots of options.

I have used the tp-link and netcomm ones and to be honest the nas side in both is pretty lacking performance wise. Either get a synology or qnap or build one from an old PC using free as or naslite. I have used the latter for 8years now, its only ever gone down when I moved house and when I recently upgraded the drives, cost me nothing other than a couple of drives and runs on old 486 hardware with 4tb on board.

By far the best option! FreeNAS is a wicked platform and is what I run at home.
