Hey Folks,

UPDATE: For an easier version of this please visit www.unlockit.co.nz from your iPhone. Thanks to GZ user LennonNZ for this automated solution.

I have managed to activate Data on the new 3G iPhone, However you need to be aware that if you follow my instructions below it could end up costing you A LOT of money, so much in fact, that unless you are loaded I would not recomend doing this!

However if you are loaded or just don't care about the cost here is the guide.

Please note that neither myself, geekzone, kiwi-ise, piksel or any one related to us or the site will in any way take any responsibility if you damage your iPhone during this process or damage your bank balance.

You need a non-Vodafone Sim card (I used an old Telecom Roaming Sim from O2) UPDATE: You can use a current Telecom Roaming Sim card as well, you won't get any service but that is OK, all you need to do is get the extra menu item to show.

1. Remove your Vodafone Sim card

2. Insert your alternate sim card

3. Once you have service go to Settings -> General -> Network

4. You should see an option for "Cellular Data Network" - DON'T Press this yet

5. Remove your alternate sim and re-insert your Vodafone Prepay card

6. The "Cellular Data Network" option should remain, Once you have service press this option.

7. You will now see the Vodafone APN settings for the iPhone as follows:

APN: www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz
Username: Blank
Password: Blank

8. Change the APN to www.vodafone.net.nz and leave the Username and Password fields blank.

9. Press "Network" in the top right hand corner to go back to the network settings screen

10. Press the home button

Now when you try to use Data over 3G or GPRS it will work. (when you are testing it make sure you switch off wi-fi)

To revert back, you need to go through the process again, just don't change the APN when you get to that stage. I thought you could just pop your sim out and push it back in again, but that didn't seem to work. Please note that hard rebooting the iPhone will not revert the changes, you must go through the process again.

Obviously Make sure you have credit or you will not get internet access. Also when you run out of credit it will stop working.

If this works for you please let me know.

Once I get more credit (I used $20.00 in like 5 minutes) I will run through the process again and will post a video to Youtube. Until then happy browsing

Just as a guide it cost me 50 cents to view the main page on the App Store, so beware when I say it is expensive!

VODAFONE ARE YOU LISTENING?

Yes - I am YELLING.

Its STUPID to try and prevent people using your service and paying you for the privilege!

Also - its great that it doesn't actually need any complex 'hacking' - this is do-able by any 3 year old with a runny nose (who would clearly be smarter than the people at Vodafone who make the decisions these days).

I've heard there is an "easier" way of changing the APN. I will let ppl know when I verify it tomorrow.

Heads up folks,

I just spanked another 20 bucks!! I didn't do too much, received about 15 emails and went to the App Store a couple of times.

I can't stress enough how expensive it is to use Data on Prepay with the iPhone. I suggest using it in emergencies only. But it is up to you, you have been warned!

I'm assuming this will come down at the end of the month when the casual data charges price change.

Regarding the concerns about overspend, just wait until the 27th of July when Voda drop their casual rate to $1 per day for 10MB and you should be sweet.

The App Store has quite a lot of pictures... so the front page coming at 50KB isn't surprising.

So... 2MB for a few emails and the App Store. That 10MB limit is seriously going to get stretched.

Post Updated:

You do not need an overseas sim card, a current Telecom Roaming Sim will also work. These are probably easier to come by than a overseas sim card.

Forgive my ignorance but is a Telecom Roaming Sim easily purchased from a dairy or Telecom store?  Is it a simple case of forking over twenty bucks for one?  Sorry I don't know much about Telecom.

Don't get me started on Vodafone's "$1 a day" plan, cause lets face it that really is stretching the advertising standards to the limit. "I know lets call it a $1 a day when it's not really a $1 a day if they use more than 10MB"  but I digress.

It would be nice to have a 10MB buffer knowing that the 10MB is only gonna cost me a dollar. But believe me, it will cost a lot more than that if you want to actually use the Data on it.

No you need to call Telecom and they will send you one. There is no charge for it, but you need to have a Telecom mobile on an account. Contact the International Roaming Helpdesk on 0800 492 120 and ask them to send you a Roaming sim, when they ask for your Telecom mobile number, you need to tell them you are using an old GSM phone if your handset is not a world mode phone.
