I have had a Navman MY55T for quite a while - probably not the best GPS unit on the market but it's been fine for what I need. 18 months ago I went to Australia for a few weeks and wanted to drive from Melbourne to Brisbane, stopping in several places along the way (many of them off the main highway) and I decided to take my own GPS rather than pay extra to hire one with the rental car, so I paid the fee to get the Aussie maps and everything worked well...

I was recently talking to a guy who used to work in Bond and Bond. He reckons all Navman units sold in NZ have both the NZ and AU maps installed and all you pay for is an unlock code to enable you to use the AU maps. Fair enough. But he also said you don't actually have to pay to unlock the maps. Just take your NZ Navman to AU, switch it on and reset it, and it will automatically start using the AU maps when it connects to the satellite.

Anyone know if this is for real?

Lots of new GPS units these days include both Australian and NZ maps, whether your one did would depend entirely when you got it.
