Hello All!

We are launching a new ISP and even though i don't like to promise anything and under deliver i'm pretty sure you will like what we have up our sleeve.

However we are keen to hear your annoyances with the ISP's out there currently and what would be your dream ISP.

We wanna launch and hit the ball out of the park!

Cheers Guys/Gals

Dave

Internet connectivity is such a commodity item these days, yet even the larger players do a fairly average job in the areas of support, communication and billing.

Its all about total customer experience, price and performance alone won't cut it anymore.

richms: Bigpipe does everything right IMO.

Do they peer openly with other ISPs, their parent company certainly does not?

Exactly totally agree with you there.

What we are focusing on is price point and quality network with reliable backbones, Customer focus is right up there too!

Don't know/care on that one.

I have fast internet, they take money off my card each month. I dont have to call them to query things because they do customer service right.

Im not using it for anything like netflix thru unotelly because it doesnt play nice with the CG Nat, but for all the youtubing, app downloading, torrenting, FTP, youtube uploading and everything else I get as close to my line speed as I would expect.

One thing i should add is we are not compromising on bandwidth.

We don't believe in traffic shaping. We believe everyone one should get full speed as fast as there line goes.

Also we are working hard in regards to traffic routes internationally.

Great, so how much international bandwidth will you be provisioning per customer?

This depends on the service requested, ADSL, FIBRE, VDSL2

Our Carrier is Vocus with backup links to Telstra, so we are still in the process on working that out.

What do you suggest?

Well a CIR of 1Mbps would be nice, problem is the CIR we get from chorus is lower than that.

Internet in NZ is pretty abysmal since its a monopoly and ISPs don't really offer much difference when it comes to the actual connectivity side of things.

If you lay your own fibre in Palmerston North then I'll be interested, until then you'll probably be pretty much the same as everyone else.

provision enough so that your never have any congestion. (only exception would be stuff like rare DDOS attacks)

The 'average' for NZ is probably about 200kbps (given chorus says their handovers use 250kbps, and about 70-80% of that would be international at my guess), but since you are posting here, I assume you aren't going for little grannies who only use email, so you won't be getting the large amount of very low users that skew that average down.

If you are going for Netflix users, torrent users (with no traffic shaping) and the like, especially on VDSL/UFB then I'd say you'll probably need at least 1Mbps per customer.
That costs about $20/customer (on top of the $45 you are paying Chorus for UBA or $40 for UFB entry level) at today's pricing, but that pricing does drop every year.  On the other hand, usage also grows every year, so it balances out.
Good luck!

Another ISP? The market seems pretty saturated. You have two big players (telecom, vodafone) and a bunch of smaller ones (Snap, BigPipe, Orcon, Slingshot, Actrix) plus at least half a dozen I know little or nothing about.

How are you going to differentiate yourselves? Price? I suspect you'll find it difficult to undercut the existing ISPs by enough to make people switch, and if you can either bandwidth or service will suffer.

My priorities are: reliable service, reasonable costs (but $10 or $20 is irrelevant), good customer service, good peering. TC/Vodafone lost a customer of many years due to poor peering and poor service.

I wish you luck, I think you'll need it.

I totally understand and yep agree with you in regards to the market is saturated, but what we have found are a lot of ISP's are slow to move on technologies.

IPV6 is the future and we are building an infrastructure for that.

As soon as chorus drops prices we will pass that onto our customers, either by features, new services even cutting costs!
