By the way... am I right in thinking that the full 7-day EPG can be extracted from the DVB-S freeview signal by Mediaportal or is it still only the Now/Next ?? Anyone know?

The full EPG is broadcast on DVB-S using the DVB EIT tables that Media Portal along with virtually every other piece of TV software can pick up.

Yes and gbpvr can do similar. Including dumping the EPG to a file so that you can split/edit it.

The official freeview listing files (in xml format) are also quite usefull, but they're not strictly a proper xmltv format, and do take a little massaging (I think this is what reven now uses as his primary source, rather than screen scraping the sky/Telstraclear web pages). But that said it doesn't take my to make them into xmltv format.

Whether that help an MCE use I don't know, as I've never personally looked at the MCE epg file format. But GBPVR/Media Portal/MythTV etc all use xmltv file format.

So is anyone using xmlTVNZ with BSE? Or is it best not to use BSE with xmlTVNZ?

At this stage my EPG source still appears to be up but if it is taken down too I will need to be able to switch in a hurry so would like to have a plan in place now.

Long-term the best solution has to be extracting the data from the DVB-T broadcast EPG using a tool like the one sbiddle mentioned early in this thread:

sbiddle: Leith Bade did some fantastic work on this here writing an MHEG5 to XML extraction tool, very few people seem to have taken advantage of it.

That has to be the best type of solution as it doesn't involve any third party publishing the EPG information, and so it isn't subject to the type of legal challenge that has caused the current issue. Unfortunately Leith Bade's tool does appear to need some work before it is really ready for mainstream use.

I hadn't realised that 'only' the DVB-T went with the MHEG5 version. Nice to see that they are consistent across the two platforms! :-)

I agree with Deev8 that getting a solution that will keep working would be nice. I guess an option becomes whether to buy an entry-level DVB-S card just for the EPG data. Sounds like it 'should' keep working for some time to come.

DVB-S also uses MHEG5 for the official EPG, but the EIT EPG was also transmitted due to the number of devices already in use when Freeview was launched.

Interesting... So not as daft as I thought!

I guess the question is... how long will they keep transmitting both the EIT and the MHEG5 versions. I guess if it is in place and doesn't cost them anything then they may keep doing so for some time.

Only time will tell.

my program downloads and converts those files into xmltv.

i tried running it, it seems to still work. just freeview channels. no sky.

i used to use this as an external app for epgstream.net but since epgstream is not yet windows 7 compatible, i just use the inbuilt dvb-s eit stream.

Don't suppose you could modify this to pass through the <video><quality> flag by any chance ie the HD flags, these are in the xml files on the Freeview site.

I've gone back to using my old EIT scraper, but unfortunately the <quality> flag either isn't broadcast using DVB-S EIT or DVBGuide doesn't recognise it.

This doesn't present any issues for Sky, who use HD through the title etc (easy enough to script this into useable info, but for Freeview, well thats another story.

Not a biggy if its alot of work.
