I think you've made some pretty good improvements to your line (which, based on your attenuation) was pretty good to start with. However, there does seem to be some kind of noise or interference on the line based on what your spectrum graph is showing. You should definitely be seeing the full 10mbit upload with your line specs!! Odd that you're not getting any CRCs tho.

DSL went down this morning and came back up like this:

1500 Up, yet last night I was synced at 7500 Up! What the hell is going on. I have no clue what the interference is about, must be something interfering with the line before it gets to the demarc.

Yeah I would log a fault about those upload speeds. EDIT: and those wildly varying downstream sync rates.

Or get someone to look at your internal wiring... it sounds like you don't have a master filter which is weird if you were told you had one and have the alarm...  if you don't have anything other than a single jackpoint  where the modem is plugged in connected to the demarc then you technically don't need a master filter - I have the same setup and took out my master filter cause it isn't really needed if that's how everything is wired.

Out of curiousty I just put an ADSL filter on my line and check out the results haha:

Is it possible that the spike in the line is because I still have a dialtone or something on my line?
Either way the ADSL filter has made a HUGE improvement.

Nice; but how did you connect the ADSL filter? I assume it's one of the plug in ones... but that's really weird because if something else is still connected to your line it's sort of on the wrong side of the plug in filter.

I would get someone like coffeebaron on these forums (if you're in Auckland or Waikato - if elsewhere not sure who you could get) to look at your wiring.

Yep its just a standard plug in ADSL filter.

I am wondering if Snap/Chorus have connected a "Phone Line" to my line as well as VDSL? Not quite sure how it works, but I am supposed to be Naked VDSL. So perhaps that would explain the noise in the line and why putting the filter on has helped because there is an analog phone signal sitting on the line when there shouldnt be?

With a naked connection do you still have a dial tone on the line? I am going to borrow a phone from a friend and plug it in and see what I get.

I am in Christchurch, if anyone in Christchurch is keen to help with wiring I am more than happy to pay them to come and take a look.

I believe VDSL works fine on a "clothed" line provided all POTS devices (phones, alarms, sky, etc) and extra jackpoints are on one side of a splitter and the modem is on the DSL side (as per steves previous diagrams) so if snap have enabled a phone line I don't think it should be an issue.

Maybe your alarm is wired in somewhere you're not expecting but no idea if that makes sense with a plug in filter improving things.

I would start a new thread in the Broadband section with pictures of how the wiring looks in your demarc and other jackpoints near the demarc (especially the one you've got the modem plugged into) and see if anyone can help you unravel it; EDIT: Also I would contact snap, tell them what's happening and just confirm nothing else looks odd on their end.

That's weird because ADSL line filters only filter the phone side, the ADSL side is unfiltered (AFAIK). I wonder if it's just a fluke and if you resync again your upload speeds will drop again?

Notice that INP is 0 for download but 2 for upload. So the DSLAM is definitely seeing significant spikes of noise on the upstream signal. I don't think we've seen a case of different INP settings on upload and download before. There's definitely something weird going on.

Effect of "Identification of radio frequency interference (RFI)" Setting on my line

I currently have the RFI setting on my line settings down by 1 and someone asked a few pages back if I noticed a difference. Since I changed Intended SNRM and RFI at the same time I wasn't sure, so I decided to try changing only RFI this morning. Keep in mind that last week I changed SNRM from 14->13 and saw a rise in Errors too (So put it back to 14 at the time)  It looks like both make quite a difference on my line.

RFI 1 to the Left

This was before I tweaked it.  My error rate has gone up slightly this week and bitswap is now on, but everything else was looking decent.

RFI Max Performance (Right)

Ouch, RFI back to max performance causes a pretty significant jump in errors. And I didn't notice much else in the way of differences.  Throughput seemed pretty much the same:

RFI back to left by 1

I've since put it back to the left by one and error rate has gone back to reasonable levels. So RFI might be worth trying if anybody else has error rates that are a bit high.

Cool, I'd be interested to know if you see an improvement :) Not like I've done exhaustive testing on my line, lol

To clarify my info below; when I am referring to 'positions' for the RFI setting, I'm meaning that position 1 is the default all the way to the right (Maximum Performance) and 5 is all the way to the left (Maximum stability).

Last night I decided to go the full monty with the RFI setting and so I just whacked it up to 5 initially. However, the errors were HUGE!! I'm talking 15 CRCPM in the first minute! So I put it down to 3 which seemed to give positive results and left it there. Overnight My CRCPM errors dropped from 9 to 0.44!! That's a 95% improvement in errors!! SNRM was up from a constant 11 to 12 again too (I'm on stock SNRM settings ATM). There was no measurable change in sync rate & speedtest shows the same (if not slightly higher) speeds.

Today I decided to try some other setting positions; I tried 2 & 4, but again I was getting huge errors. So I went back to 3 again - which then also gave me huge errors!?

On a hunch I set it to 5 again and restarted the router... which yielded MUCH better results! I've only been running it in this config for 15min, but so far it's looking promising; CRCPM is sitting at around 0.66 which, while not as good as when RFI was set to 3, is still much better than 9! Initially when RFI was on 3 I got higher errors too, so the rate may reduce as time progresses. I'll keep you posted!

Thanks for trying out RFI sidefx! I had originally discounted this setting as RFI stands for 'Radio Frequency Interference', and I was doubtful that there would be much of this underground, but either there is, or this setting also helps with other types of interference. Either way, a 95% error decrease cannot be ignored!!

Another lesson (re)learnt today is when changing settings on the Fritz, it pays to restart it as for some unknown reason settings don't always apply correctly (or something).

This is very interesting & exciting stuff!! My hopes for DLM-1 have returned! :D

Nice one; yeah I was fully expecting it make no difference. Was quite surprised when to find that it apparently does.

Well, it's been 4 hours now on RFI 5 and CRCPM are down to 0.36! WIN!
