Palm OS 6 is supposed to build on a next generation communications framework for new and upcoming technologies. Scalable communications, a more robust security feature set, a new multimedia framework with a scalable graphics engine, interchangeable I/O features (such as the ability to incorporate many different methods of data input) and a new messaging framework.
In addition to that Palm OS 6 will be the first true multitask Palm OS version. Currently Palm OS 5 allows for limited multitask, at system level. This new version allows developers to have native ARM code, instead of emulated. Palm OS used to run on DragonBall processors until now, and just recently Palm OS 5 was moved into ARM (XScale) processors, but in emulation mode. With this new feature developers can code ARMLets, which will use ARMs set of instructions instead of a translated one.
The new version of Palm OS is under development and is codenamed Sahara.
