Urban Legends live forever

Posted on 7-Jul-2003 08:13 | Filed under: News

The old 90# myth, which goes around the world now and then, has now landed in Australia. The gullible folks spread the world so strongly, that Telstra had to issue a press release on this . A complete explanation of this Urban Legend is on Snopes, an excellent reference for all things Urban Legend.

The current 90# myth claims that by dialling 90# call charges will be transferred to another account.

Telstra Consumer and Marketing, Chief of Products, Ms Lynda O'Grady, said over a number of years, several different versions of this myth had been circulated around the community.

"Customers can be completely confident the Telstra fixed and mobile networks are world-class in terms of security," Ms O´Grady said.

"There is simply no truth in rumours that dialling 90# will somehow override network security and transfer call charges to someone else's account.

"These urban myths originate from overseas, however, they have no relevance to Australian fixed or mobile networks," Ms O'Grady said.

Concerned customers can visit a special Telstra web-page which lists other well-known mobile phone hoaxes.
