Datacom celebrates new data centre with official opening
Posted on 1-May-2013 16:03 | Tags Filed under: News

Datacom staff, executive and Board, along with ICT and Environment Minister Amy Adams, Tainui leaders, Waikato dignitaries, industry representatives and government officials from right across the country get together in Hamilton later today to officially open the Kapua Data Centre.

Kapua, a Tier-3+ data centre covers 11,000 square metres of land and has the capacity to house over 920 racks across 5 data floors with room for further significant expansion.

Datacom has 9 data centres across its Australasian operations. The paired and purpose built facilities of Hamilton’s Kapua and Orbit in Auckland, represent the best geographically diverse high tier data centre facilities in NZ and $90million of infrastructure investment from the local IT services company.

Greg Davidson Datacom NZ CEO, says, “It’s a good day for New Zealand enterprise and for Datacom. We now have the largest footprint of purpose built IT data centre services in New Zealand and beyond the infrastructure Kapua is the neutral ground for a collaborative IT community.

In keeping with our open and independent approach, this facility provides customers with a destination for housing their technology regardless of who they have sourced it from, or who they have supporting it. All the major Telco’s already provide services to our centres which means customer installation costs are minimised.

Customers can also mix and match providers to their commercial advantage, and change their mix of providers as new products and services come to market, a very prudent strategy in today’s volatile communications market, “said Davidson.

Located in geologically sound Hamilton, Kapua Data Centre is purpose built to meet the exacting requirements of both significant government and commercial organisations. The facility boasts world class disaster recovery enablement services, is highly secure, guarded and supported by specialist staff 24/7.

Davidson says, “Cloud is key, we’re implementing at Kapua cloud and infrastructure as a service platforms for both our government and commercial customers and we’re piloting the next wave of virtual networking technologies that will allow us to offer even more flexibility in configuring and deploying cloud networks.”

Datacom has all major telecommunication providers with dual path connectivity into the facility and can provide diverse path connectivity to Orbit and other data centres in New Zealand.

This capability supports the most demanding, most latency intolerant applications such as synchronous data replication required for banking and other real time requirements.

Datacom is connected internationally at the Kapua Data Centre and is participating with VMware to certify its data centre facilities and cloud infrastructure as part of a global network.

“This strategic alignment will support organisations looking for a common compute ‘cloud’ experience with nodes right across the world. In this region it will simplify and bring together the Datacom cloud nodes across Australasia allowing customers to easily move workloads around.” says Davidson.

Kapua employs the same Datacom developed and sustainable free air cooling system that is deployed at the Orbit centre in Auckland which has already achieved impressive energy efficiency. The rolling 12 month PUE at our Auckland data centre is below the design specification of 1.5.

Sustainable and efficient, power and cooling design is for 5.8MW of power capability to the IT equipment.

Kapua, is the Maori word for cloud, and with this facility Datacom have delivered the best environment to house IT systems in New Zealand.
