Nokia redefines automotive communications
Posted on 9-Sep-2003 07:34 | Tags Filed under: News

Even before the formal announcement of Bluetooth SAP (SIM Access Profile) Nokia starts planning uses for the feature. According to a Nokia Press Release:

"With the new wireless connection using Bluetooth SIM Access Profile (SAP), automotive communications will soon be even easier and more convenient. This innovative solution allows a device to access a SIM card in a compatible mobile phone over a wireless link using Bluetooth technology, and use that SIM card's identification and communications functions. The device is then able to read and write data from/to the SIM card inserted in the other device as if the SIM was connected via
cable.

As part of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), a trade association comprised of leaders in the telecommunications,
computing, and network industries, Nokia Smart Traffic Products was a substantial contibutor to the technical development of the SAP concept. Nokia is a pioneer in this field and was committed to drive the progress of Bluetooth SIM Access Profile (SAP) standardization.

Razvan Olosu, General Manager, Nokia Smart Traffic Products, Nokia Mobile Phones, describes the innovation as follows: "We view the new wireless Bluetooth SAP profile as an important contribution to the future of communications in vehicle environment. With the new Bluetooth SAP profile, the device used in the car can access the SIM card in a compatible mobile phone, located perhaps in a nearby briefcase, and automatically log into the GSM network. This really
adds to the overall convenience of the users."

At the 8th annual Nokia Mobile Internet Conference (NMIC) which takes place 29-30 October 2003 in Nice, France, Nokia will be presenting its first automotive communication solution using Bluetooth SAP technology.
