British O2 launches a camera phone to compete with Vodafone Sharp GX10
O2 customers in the UK will be able to buy a new colour clamshell camera phone from 1st November. The O2 X1 will be available free of charge with a post-pay contract from O2 Stores and O2 Online, and will cost up to 49.99 at third party outlets. The UK pre-pay price will be 169.99 It will be available in Germany from 17th November and in Ireland around the same time. The specs and style are in direct competition to Vodafone's Sharp GX10i.

The O2 X1 comes with a 65,000 colour, high-resolution screen and a rotating integrated camera. The internal memory can store up to 100 high-resolution photos or about 10 Java games. In addition to the standard phone features, the O2 X1 also includes 40 ring-tones and 2 pre-installed Java games.

Launched in time for the Christmas market, the O2 X1 offers a 'hot button' access key to O2 Active - a branded colour menu that gives access to O2's walled-garden O2 Active.

Key features of the O2 X1 include:

  • O2 key for direct access to O2 Active and all O2 services.
  • Clamshell design, compact and stylish. 89 x 48 x 23.5mm (length x breadth x height).
  • Lightweight: 85g.
  • Built in 204k pixel digital camera - front or back facing (rotating lens). Quality: VGA (640*480), NOR (128*120), with a 20fps viewfinder.
  • 29 x 37 mm screen, with 65,000 colours.
  • 2MB memory - capable of storing 100 high-resolution photographs or 10 Java games. Images can be transferred to PC via a cable.
  • 40 polyphonic ring-tones
  • WAP and GPRS compatible.
  • Talk-time: up to 300 minutes (5 hrs).
  • Standby time: up to 72 hours (3 days).
