Lucent reveals new chip for 3G mobile phones

Posted on 13-Feb-2003 08:35 | Filed under: News

Telcos are facing big competition in wireless broadband in the form of wi-fi. They paid big sums of money to buy 3G spectrum, but deployment has been slow and customer uptake even slower. The first networks are still being rolled out.

In the meantime, users and companies are setting up wi-fi hot spots in airports, cafes, hotels, streets. Companies are setting up roaming capable wi-fi networks in a entire CBD.

Will this new chip from Lucent allow for faster 3G handsets, and push the telcos market model forward?

Have a look on this ZDNet article about this new chip.
