The HP Envy x360 14 might be just what content creators and home users need. Thanks to its touchscreen it can be used either as a traditional laptop, a tablet or even as a standup display.
Convertible laptops aren't something new and the HP Envy x360 is one of the longest lines of convertible laptop, continuing a tradition that started ten years ago.
The 14” inch OLED HDR-compatible display is brilliant. The touchscreen is responsive and the picture pops with life and colours. The sound is good but if you really want something to match the display you might be looking for an external speaker.
Its keyboard is comfortable to use, and the trackpad is one of those that just work, thanks to its size and the amount of space available around it to rest your hands.
The review unit had an Intel Core i7-1355u and 16 GB RAM. It feels responsive for some tasks, which would go from the basic web browsing and email to some heavier tasks like light image editing and probably some medium coding. Benchmark results put it in the middle of the pack for overall performance, between the transportable desktop HP Move and the gaming-oriented HP Omen 14.
With two Thunderbolt 4 ports with USB-C (40 Gpbs, USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort 1.4 and HP Sleep and Charge), two USB-A ports (10 Gbps), HDMI 2.1 and headphone/microphone 3.5” jack the HP Envy x360 14 has enough ports to keep your peripherals in sync. This package is completement with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
A 5-megapixel HP Wide Vision camera can be used for video conferencing, and also for Windows Hello authentication so you can unlock your laptop by simply looking at it-with satisfying speed.
Charging is via a 65 W USB-C power adapter, which is welcome and the 55 Wh battery can be charged to 50% in about 30 minutes. Despite the 12 hours and 45 minutes “video playback” claim, the battery last less than that but still enough for a full day’s worh of work.
The review unit came with Windows Home Edition, which seems to be the standard. It did come with Dropbox and McAfee security software trial offers, which I don’t personally use, so I removed these from the default install to ensure the benchmark testing wasn’t impacted.
Overall dimensions at 35.7 x 22.8 x 1.8 cm, and at 1.75 kg the HP Envy x360 14 is an easy to carry laptop, and you’d expect no less for a versatile device that can be used for both content creation and consumption.
