China Mobile awarded Siemens mobile with a contract to set up the world's second-largest WAP gateway installation. The new system will serve users in the provinces of Guangdong, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Sichuan in the southeastern part of China. In future more than 100 million mobile phone users will be able to use mobile internet applications via Mobile Smart Proxy.

The Mobile Smart Proxy 3.0 allows China Mobile's mobile subscribers to access information on the internet, download images, ring tones, and Java applications, or use online games via their mobile phones. The system capacity of the Siemens WAP gateway enables more than 2400 transactions per second. According to the company the worldwide average is less than 100 transactions per second.
