The Google’s Year in Search 2025 results have been released. This is an annual list that shows all the wild, interesting and topical things Kiwis searched for this year. This year, Kiwis embraced new technology while becoming more alert to digital risks and behavioural shifts.
New Zealand’s 2025 Year in Search paints a picture of a population that is pragmatic, hyper-vigilant and digitally aware.
Tech searches highlighted rising curiosity and caution. The Barbie AI trend (Internet Trends/Memes list) showed widespread interest in generative AI, while searches for Belle Gibson (People list) signalled renewed awareness of digital fraud and misinformation.
Google New Zealand's Year in Search also shows that 2025 was powered by peak internet chaos. The 6 7 trend became one of the nation’s biggest collective “wait… what?” moments. Throw in the Action Figure Trend and the Starter Pack Trend, and you’ve got a country that embraced AI, everyday humour, nostalgia and absurdity in equal measure.
Searches like “how to clear cache on Chrome", “how to screenshot on a MacBook”, and "how to make a Youtube channel" also topped the How To list, showing that Kiwis were obviously determined to be more tech savvy.
The Netflix crime/thriller series Adolescence, with its cyberbullying themes, also shaped online safety conversations.
