After more than five years of existence, Palm.Net is ceasing operations on 31 August 2004. A new entry on palmOne's Knowledge Base informs users of the coming service interruption.
All wireless handheld functionality that utilizes the Palm.Net network will not be available after 31 August 2004. Of course, owners can continue to use VII, VIIx and i705 devices in non-wireless mode. The company informs that these handheld’s wireless capability is only compatible with the Palm.Net network and can't be transferred to another network.
The service discontinuation affects users who use the palmOne WAP gateway proxy. The WAP Browser may continue to work without the palmOne proxy, if users configure the browser to connect with a third-party gateway IP address, like the ones provided by mobile operators.
This will also affect palmOne PQA (web clipping) service. palmOne recommends on its KB the migration to a new web browsing solution, and suggest users to look for a smartphone solution (of course pointing to the palmOne Treo 600).
