Intel to launch new mobile technology platform and promoting wireless month
Intel is promoting a "Mobility Month" to push the introduction of its new mobile platform called "Sonoma". The Sonoma technology is the next generation of Intel Centrino mobile technology platform, including a new Intel Pentium M processor with a faster, 533 MHz front-side bus; a new Wi-Fi component that supports the 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g wireless networking standards; and, a new chipset code-named "Alviso." The chipset will support third-generation graphics and enable support for devices and standards such as Direct Media Interface with improved bandwidth, TV-out, high definition audio, eight USB ports, four-port PCI Express, and up to 2GB of DDR2 memory. Alviso will also support Intel High Definition Audio with low power capabilities to reduce power consumption by allowing the processor to remain in a sleep state while audio activity is happening. The platform was initially announced in Feb 2004.

As part of the launch activities, Intel has partnered with Yahoo! to offer a contest in the US. For two weeks beginning 6 Jan, use Yahoo! Maps to find an Intel Centrino mobile technology-verified hotspot and the user could win a Sony notebook based on the Sonoma technology. Other prizes include movie downloads from Movielink and music downloads from Musicmatch. Every entrant will receive a free month of games from Yahoo! Games on Demand.
