Microsoft announces MSN Video Downloads
With content such as sports highlights, news headlines, children's programming, music videos, independent films and comedy shows, MSN Video Downloads is the first online video download service dedicated to portable entertainment. Starting from 6 January consumers can participate in a preview of the service and access videos from more than a dozen of Microsoft partners.

The MSN Video Downloads service, will offer free, trial and paid memberships. Digital videos are downloaded daily to a Windows Media Player 10 library, ready to be synchronized with Portable Media Centers.

The video content is compliant with PlaysForSure devices, optimized for Portable Media Centers, and compatible with Windows Mobile Smartphones and Pocket PCs that support video. The company promisses full Smartphone and Pocket PC optimization to be enabled at a later date.

A one-year premium membership to the MSN Video Downloads service with access to all available videos costs US$19.95. In addition, users can access a limited amount of free content without a paid membership.

In addition to this service, MTV Networks and Microsoft Corp. announced an agreement to cooperate on several long-term digital media initiatives, including bringing MTVN entertainment programming and brands such as MTV, VH1, CMT and Comedy Central to Portable Media Centers. As part of the alliance, MTVN will develop programming and entertainment offerings to be made available through multiple new distribution points, including microprogramming for Portable Media Centers that will include news features, musical performances and other entertainment content.

The following programming will be available on MSN Video Downloads:

  • CNBC. Business news headlines and specialty news shows, updated several times a day
  • MSNBC. News headlines updated throughout the day, as well as segments from NBC News including "Today," "Nightly News with Brian Williams" and "Dateline NBC"
  • FOX Sports. In-depth news, analysis and unparalleled national and regional coverage of the National Football League, Major League Baseball, NASCAR, the National Basketball Association, and select college basketball and football highlights, as well as FOX Sports Net (FSN) original programming including "Best Damn Sports Show Period" and "Beyond the Glory"
  • COOKIE JAR Entertainment. Children's programs such as "Paddington Bear," "Animal Crackers" and others
  • Home and Garden Television. Selected programs featuring remodeling, home-building, design and decorating, kitchen and bath to enhance a home's curb appeal
  • DIY Network. Videos about home improvement, crafts, hobbies, indoor-outdoor living, and kitchen and bath remodeling
  • Food Network. Fun and interesting videos featuring grilling tips, ideas for entertaining, healthy eating, quick and easy recipes, and pop-culture food specials
  • FINE LIVING. Inspiring programs featuring travel destinations, mind and body enrichment, ideas for entertaining, home design as well as videos for automobile enthusiasts
  • IFILM Corp. Movie trailers, short films and exclusive videos
  • Want Media. Music videos, live concerts, Broadway shows, extreme sports and motor sports programs, full-length films from independent filmmakers and underground cinemas
  • Headliners Entertainment Group Inc. (OTC BB: HLNR). Operator of Rascals Comedy Clubs presents a selection of comedy clips from Rascals Comedy Classics, including performances from popular stars like Tim Allen, Rosie O'Donnell, Drew Carey and Ray Romano. Only Rascals can bring viewers comedy superstars, before they were stars and the breaking stars of tomorrow, today.
  • BreakTV. Behind-the-scenes footage and excusive interviews with TV's hottest celebrities
  • TotalVid. Action sports clips including surfing, snowboarding, climbing, BMX, mountain biking, kite-surfing, motocross, skateboarding, windsurfing and whitewater rafting.
