New software lets Symbian smartphones play ringtones with video
Makayama Software is introducing Watchtones, a new software and service for Nokia phones based on Symbian Series 60. The Watchtones are ringtones with fullmotion video and real sound.

A watchtones appears on the users phone when an incoming call arrives. People will see video clips such as a tropical aquarium with music, or paradivers performing stunts in the air. A content portal has been set up with many pre-produced Watchtones, but consumers can also create their own watchtones with special PC software.

Watchtones integrates with all the standard calling functions: the name of the caller is displayed over the video and missed calls are displayed after the Watchtone. On the website consumers can download and try some ready-made Watchtones.

The company says that all content and software is delivered over the internet and Watchtones puts the consumer back in charge, allowing users to create their own content. Consumers can make their own watchtones with WatchTones Studio software, allowing them to convert personal home movies or favourite media clips into watchtones.

The optional PC software installs an encoding package on a Windows XP-based PC. The user picks a video file and with three clicks the software turns it into a watchtone, which plays on any compatible Nokia series 60 Symbian phone.

Consumers can download a free trial version of WatchTones Studio and preview all ready-made Watchtones before they buy. The retail price for WatchTones Studio software is EUR 19.95 (US$24.95) and the ready-made Watchtones are EUR 3.95 (US$4.95).
