Juniper Systems Introduces Rugged Pocket PC Based on Windows Mobile 5.0
Juniper Systems is introducing a rugged Pocket PC device based on Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0. The Archer Field PC is waterproof and dustproof to IP67, and shockproof tested to multiple drops to concrete (5 foot, 1.5 meters).

The Archer Field PC measures 6.5" x 3.5" x 1.7" (165 x 89 x 43 mm) and weighs 17 ounces (482 grams). Its body is made of a magnesium case with elastomer overmold.

This new Pocket PC is based on an Intel Xscale PXA270 CPU running at 520MHz, with 64MB RAM and 128MB flash ROM. Memory can be expanded by using either the Compact Flash (Type I or Type II) or SD slot. The connectors are user accessible, but fully sealed. Other devices can be connected through a USB Host and Client connector or a 9-pin RS-232 adapter.

The device comes with the standard software part of Windows Mobile 5, including the office suite with Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile (viewer only). It also provides Microsoft Outlook Mobile with email, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes. Users can access the Internet with Pocket Internet Explorer and use MSN Messenger for instant messaging, if connected to a network.

It also comes comes with Microsoft ActiveSync 4.0, Terminal Services Client, Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 Mobile and other tools.

The TFT active matrix transflective LCD provides an active viewing area of 3.5" (89 mm) with QVGA resolution (240 x 320 pixels) and selection of portrait or landscape views.

With a rechargeable Li-Ion battery pack users will be able to operate more than 20 hours on a full charge, with 3 to 4 hours needed to completely recharge the battery.
