Panasonic was granted approval for a new ruggedized Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition. The Toughbook CF-P2 was approved with GSM/GPRS operating in the 850/1900 MHz bands and comes with 802.11b Wi-Fi, plus Bluetooth.
Unlike other Pocket PC Phone Edition, the CF-P2 features a numeric keypad similar to that on mobile phones.
On its first version it seems the new Pocket PC will run Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition instead of the newer Windows Mobile 5.0.
Following the Toughbook brand used in laptops and tablet PCs, the Toughbook CF-P2 is ruggedized to some extent, and will resist drops, shock, temperature and humidity, but it is not designed for use in extreme conditions.
