NEC to Introduce New TFT LCD Module for Portable Information Devices
NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd. will begin shipping samples of its new 3.5 inch (8.9 centimeters) amorphous silicon thin-film-transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD), in the beginning of June.

The new LCD is extremely suitable for installation in various portable devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and portable GPS terminals as it can reproduce colors clearly and vividly even in indoor/outdoor environments with high ambient light.

By optimization of its optical design, the new LCD achieves 220cd/m2 of luminance and 15% reflective ratio. These numbers are between 2.1 and 2.3 times that of a conventional LCD. This increase is possible while maintaining backlight power consumption equivalent to that of conventional products.

This new display also achieves a high contrast ratio of 150:1, compared to 90:1 found in other products.

Even with these enhancements, the total module design achieves a reduction in weight by approximately 10%, despite the installation of both a timing controller and a DC-DC converter.
