"First of all, I know that despite some of the more highfalutin marketing, SprintPCS Vision is not really 3G, but is really 2.5G or a stepping stone between the previous dog-slow wireless data services and the promised, faster 3G services that are just now starting to be rolled out in test areas. 2.5G networks, using either GPRS or CDMA-1X, have proliferated in the past year or so to the point that they're available in most areas with heavy wireless coverage. Some analysts think that the step from second generation voice services (2G), to 2.5G, that includes always-on network connectivity and modest data speeds will actually be a bigger revolution to the consumer than the super-high data rates of the promised 3G networks."
