NAVTEQ has announced the immediate availability of its full coverage navigable map of Australia. With the release of Australia, NAVTEQ maps now cover 6 continents and 58 countries. This offering is another notable achievement in NAVTEQ's initiative to grow its map portfolio and to support its customers in the rapidly growing Asia-Pacific navigation market.
"2006 is a year of great importance to Australians and I can think of no more symbolic time to launch our map database of Australia. The 400th anniversary of the first documented instance of navigators is a story that captures the essence of NAVTEQ as modern day explorers and cartographers; like the crew of the Duyfken who first charted the Australian Coastline," said Rich Shuman, Senior Vice President, Asia-Pacific Sales.
The NAVTEQ map of Australia covers approximately 99% of Australia's population, is fully navigable and enables door-to-door route calculations and turn-by-turn route guidance. Detailed road network information, including a collection of up to 204 attributes such as one-way streets and turn restrictions, enables navigation systems to provide efficient routing.
To build the NAVTEQ map of Australia, more than 45 field analysts from the United States, Europe and Australia spent more than six months driving more than 227,000 kilometers and collecting approximately 63,000 points of interest. By comparison, the Duyfken charted 300 kilometers of coastline in roughly the same time period.
