Fujitsu Limited has announced the new MHW2 BH series of hard disk drives (HDDs) for mobile PCs, its first 2.5" HDD offerings to incorporate advanced perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology for enhanced storage capacity.
Perpendicular Magnetic Recording is a recording technology that supports next-generation high-capacity hard disk drives. Magnetic charges are aligned perpendicularly on the media surface., thus increasing the density of data recorded on drives.
Two new models, the 160GB MHW2160BH and the 80GB MHW2080BH, will go on sale worldwide from October 2006.
In addition to achieving 160GB of storage capacity through PMR technology, the new MHW2 BH series also features the industry's highest level of shock resistance and energy efficiency. Moreover, new HDDs are RoHS compliant, a requirement to make them available in the EU.
Fujitsu is expecting to sell about six million units of the MHW2 BH series targeting mobile computers, and half of this number of its new MHW2 AT series, a low noise series for domestic use with media computers. The MHW2 AT series uses traditional technologies to store data.
