Microsoft and Telecom announce new Australia-based portals for NZ

After parting ways last year over the existing XtraMSN portal, Telecom and Microsoft New Zealand have announced their new portals that will go live on March 1 this year.

Microsoft says it will use msn.co.nz, featuring Hotmail, MSN Messenger, Live Search and content from ACP and ninemsn, part of Australia's leading media company PBL Media. New Zealand content is said to come from TV3 and ACP magazines Metro, Cleo, Netguide and Taste with job ads from SEEK. A small team in New Zealand will run MSN NZ with support from ninemsn in Australia.

New Zealand currently has over a million Hotmail and 300,000 MSN Messenger users, Microsoft says.

Telecom is also launching its new portal in partnership with Yahoo! on March 1, at yahooxtra.co.nz. The joint venture is said to have between 45 to 50 staff, with 35 stationed in New Zealand for local content, management and sales. Seven Media Group of Australia is the Yahoo media partner, with New Zealand content providers to be announced later today.

The new Yahoo!Xtra portal will be pitched at Telecom's 600,000 Xtra customers, using Yahoo's email, messenger and social networking services.
