As Telecom's new XT 3G network is nearing launch, both the incumbent and competitor Vodafone are trying to outdo each other to catch customers' attention.
Vodafone was first off the ground with the Find 3G Guy competition. This featured the 3G Guy wandering around New Zealand cities and giving away a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook with two years' worth of data usage to go with it, if you could find him. A first for New Zealand, the competition was mainly promoted using Twitter, with the @vodafonenz account.
Vodafone followed up the 3G Guy campaign with another one, where the mobile operator claims to give one million dollars worth of airtime to customers. The promotion is a aimed at customer retention, and Vodafone says it'll give a thousand dollars worth of airtime to one thousand randomly selected customers. The thousand bucks can be used to purchase any Vodafone services.
Not to be outdone, Telecom today announced a bunch of giveaways as XT goes live on Friday. Five Telecom Retail and Leading Edge stores will give the first person in line at 7.30am on Friday an XT mobile phone of their choice, with a grand worth of credit loaded. Another person waiting in the line at the store before it opens will win a Samsung LCD TV.
Other customers waiting in the line will go into a draw to win mobile devices and other items, including a Samsung F480 with $500 worth of credit, Samsung stereo Bluetooth headsets, and Telecom Prepaid credits.
