Kiwi FIRST Robotics announced the introduction of FIRST LEGO League in New Zealand with a 24 team pilot tournament held at ACG Strathallan on 12 December 2009.
Those interested in forming teams are encouraged to attend a FIRST LEGO League Primer session on 5th & 6th July. Teams consist of up to 10 students aged 9-16 years and an adult coach.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded by Dean Kamen in 1989 with a vision "To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.”. FIRST LEGO League is a global competition organized by FIRST and LEGO based around the LEGO Mindstorms robotics system.
The key to the 2009 “Smart Move” Challenge is accessing people, places, goods and services in the safest, most efficient way possible. In this journey, teams will consider many modes of transportation beyond their daily routine and streamline their options by making smart moves!
