Italian Mafia uses 3G mobile phones for their "business"

Posted on 17-May-2003 18:51 | Filed under: News

Mafia groups have traditionally tried to influence elections in Italy to hold some sway over successful candidates. Now Mafia organisations have allegedly devised an(other) elaborate vote-rigging scheme using third generation (3G) phones.

The suggestion is that voters could be bribed EUR 50 for voting for a certain candidate. Voters would claim their rewards by sending a picture message from the voting booth, proving that they had voted for the Mafia's candidate.

"Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu has taken immediate measures to stave off any attempt to violate the secrecy of the vote, with particular reference to the use of 3G phones in polling stations," said a ministry statement.
