Pocket PC 2003 OS features: rumours around the net

Posted on 20-May-2003 08:11 | Filed under: News

It may be released in June 2003. It may be not. But rumours about the (a?) new MS Pocket PC OS 2003 are around the net.

Some people say the new version is going to be another bug fix release. Some actually say this will be a major revamp on the platform. No word about installation of this OS in older devices with ROM space available. This depends on the manufacturer decisions.

The best list I've seen is on PocketNow, and includes this:

  • Secure WiFi (802.1x) support
  • Zero Configuration
  • New user interface
  • Native Bluetooth Stack
  • OS stack
  • DUN, object push, serial port profiles
  • OTA configuration manager
  • Inbox, SMS, instant messenger
  • “Always Up-to date” Syncing
  • Improved scheduled syncing
  • “Titanium” SMS notifications
  • Messaging services enhancements
  • SMS: Contacts name lookup and direct call back
  • MMS plug-in (native to inbox)
  • New Connection Manager
  • Power management with unattended apps
  • Email signatures
  • Improved time-zone handling
  • Vcard and vcal support
  • Today/Homescreen plug-in divided for multiple mail accounts
  • Color weekend appointements in calendar
  • Scrollable summary and attendees list in calendar
  • Free appointments don’t show conflicts with other calendar events
  • Network selection UI
  • New Connectivity notifications
  • Support for WinCE v4.2
  • Increased stability and reliability
  • Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) / IP Security Protocol (IPSec)
  • IPv6
  • Apps enabled within mixed mode (v6/v4) networks
