Kobo powers new Borders’ eBook Store and eReading Apps
Posted on 8-Jul-2010 08:27 | Tags Filed under: News

Kobo, a global eReading service, today announced that it is powering Borders’ eReading applications and eBook store at borders.com/ebooks. Borders leverages Kobo’s “Powered By” program which provides a flexible solution for partners to launch an eBook store that uses Kobo’s content and technology. Through this program, Borders has branded Kobo’s eReading applications, for the BlackBerrry, Android, iPhone and iPad – enabling customers to read on a selection of devices they all ready own. The partnership with Borders marks the first integration of Kobo’s “Powered By” program with a major retail partner in the US.

“Our partnership with Kobo is a significant step in our digital strategy of providing consumers with great content and a device neutral philosophy," said Mike Edwards, Chief Executive Officer for Borders, Inc. “The ‘Powered by Kobo’ program provides us with the ability to give consumers access to Kobo’s massive catalogue of titles and apps for essentially any device. We’re pleased to be aligned with a company like Kobo that shares the same vision for eReading.”

The Kobo powered Borders eBook store offers over a million and a half titles in numerous eBook standards such as ePUB and PDF. Borders customers can now access Kobo’s extensive eBook library, featuring New York Times best sellers, the latest new releases from top authors around the globe, and hundreds of thousands of free titles ranging from 18th century romance novels to thrillers and more.

The eBook store also supports a range of eReading devices, including the $149 Kobo eReader which is available for purchase online at www.borders.com/koboereader, as well as select Borders retail locations. The Kobo eReader is a stylized, easy-to-use, affordable eInk device that comes pre-loaded with the Borders Desktop app, through which consumers can easily access the Borders eBook store via USB or wirelessly through Bluetooth. The Kobo eReader also comes pre-loaded with 100 classic books and can store up to 1000 eBooks. The Kobo eReader is bundled with a $20 Borders gift card and when combined with the double Borders Bucks that Borders Rewards members earn on their device purchase, the offering is the best eBook value available today.

“Since launch we have been committed to making eReading available anytime, anyplace,” said Michael Serbinis, CEO of Kobo. “By powering the Borders eBook store and mobile apps, we are making our world-class eReading experience available to millions of booklovers.”

Kobo has developed a strong global following for their eReading service, and is focused on delivering the best customer experience across a wide range of devices; smartphones, desktops, laptops, eReaders and new form factors. Kobo supports open standards like EPUB and PDF, and is committed to supporting emerging standards.
