My AWD wagon has done 40k of non aligned wheels. They have warn out on the outsides of the wheels pretty bad.

Just looking for a good cheap set of Japanese tyres or a budget set of a known brand, recommendations welcome.

Ill need a wheel alignment and a warrant too.

So looking for a non cowboy as we have been spending money every warrant to keep our oldy but goody up to standard and dont want to get someone saying we need to replace parts that we dont, because our last mechanic, who has 98%/5 stars on nocowboys said we wont have any majors but wheels next wof. Of course something could happen like a cv boot, but we have replaced them. But  I have heard horror stories of mechanics milking working for wofs.

Whats the vehicle?
What driving do you do?
How often do you drive long distance?
Do you tow?

Get your WOF at VTNZ Testing Station.

Get your tyres and wheel alignment at a tyre shop.

I recommend the shop below for tyres: but thats because I buy my Michelin tyres there at a great price compared to elsewhere and they always give me great service.

Don't go to a garage for a one stop shop unless you want to pay more. Even the most honest mechanic will err on the side of caution and safety and cost you more.

The testing stations don't look for work, only faults that are a fail.

i find it the other way round VTNZ look for every possible problem, even if its not current.

my  old mechanic up the coast, he has a very high rating on no cowboys, was very honest,

too far to go now.

thats because thats how a WOF should be, fail on whats wrong and tell you about what could be going wrong soon.

thats a captain obvious, but if you read it again what im saying is i am told they point out potential problems that are not current wof issues. their is a section to note these things. vtnz makes its money of wofs.

lets just forget the wof advice as im never taking my vehicle to a wof centre. it would be too much like buying an iphone after watching we created everything advertising.

found a good tyre shop, cheap and well thought of. have expensive rubber but dont need it on the wagon.

and mechanics make their money off repairs they pick up in wofs, who has more incentive to fail/make note of things? the say oh we can fix that for you

yep 99/100

there is a line between being common sense and replacing something for the sake of it.

im personally much happier with my ex local mechanic who is one of the best on nocowboys.

I'd second Discount Tyres in Grey Lynn - do a bit of ringing around first (Tony's, Beaurepaires etc) to get an idea of price, then go to Discount with the price, they will match or beat. I saw last night on TV that Beaurepaires are doing buy 4 pay for 3. As for WOF, there is a VTNZ testing station in Kingsland I think.

I'd recommend Herb Morgans in Onehunga but be aware they will push Michelins at you.

Also Tyre City in Newmarket have always offered me a good deal on the tyres I was after. They appear to have moved within the last few months are are up on Gt South Rd near Market Rd crossroads.

I found Mag and Turbo to be the cheapest and the best service in the end.
