Hi everyone,

As the old thread was locked I thought I would start a new one regarding applications for Symbian 3rd Ed.

For starters I though I would just mention that Psiloc's Total irRemote is now out.

I got it yesterday evening, haven't had too much of a chance to muck around with it just yet but so far I can confirm that it works perfectly with our Sharp television, range is over 3m (haven't fully tested range, works from the couch so not much incentive to check further!). Worth mentioning that the specific code for our television wasn't there, even after a refresh, but simply selecting another Sharp TV yielded one that worked perfectly.

No codes for my Philips DVP 642 DVD player, but then a quick search on the net shows that Philips devices are often problematic as they use Discrete Codes, rather than the more common codes where the same code performs multiple functions depending on context. Will have a look today for some Philips-specfic codes and upload them if they are around. Shame on Psiloc for not uploading all the existing known codes though, they're basically getting their userbase to do some of their work for them (although in fairness to them this may have been a result of trying to get their product to market as demand was high, I guess I'd rather have it this way than wait longer).

If your device codes aren't listed at either of the places that Psiloc suggest then try remotecentral.com.

The codes I got there for my DVD player appear to work, but it will take a little trial and error to sort which are which (the source file only says what a few of them do, and labels others less than helpfully _1, _2, _3 etc) and map them to sensible keys.

Apparently if you email Psiloc you can get a 10 day trial license for irRemote, given the current issues around device support (its growing, but still a ways off yet) I'd advise doing that for the present time.

And I hope you downloaded it via wifi on your phone. Shudder the thought of having to get up off the couch to install it!

Yeah irRemote's awesome i also just got it. Works perfect with all my stuff, well after figuring out where the infra-red port was. I luckily didn't have to load on any extra codes.

Also Google Maps Mobile 2.0 just introduced a new service called My Location.
Just download the latest sw and you'll find it in the menu.
According to the news it would be able to give your current location according to the base stations' information. Of course it can use your built-in GPS too.

I think the BS info location thingy might not work in NZ, but it's still a good application to use everyday as a map and get directions.

I tested today the My Location function in the new Google Maps Mobile and it works!

I was standing next to the Vector Arena in Auckland and the map showed my location around The Strand which is few 100 meters away from where I was and it's within of 1000m radius what Google promises.

Great stuff!

I was wondering from where the hell Google have got their database, which tells the base stations' locations?
To be able to do this thay have to have a database with BS locations from VF, haven't they? Somebody enlighten me pls.

And again I must mention FRING: www.fring.com
Since it's roaming between WLAN and 3G it became a killer application for me.

Talk to Skype, MSN, GoogleTalk, etc users from your phone using 3G or Wifi!

BTW I measured the data traffic while using Fring: 15 minutes talk with my friend took 2MB upload and 2MB download, 4MB data traffic altogether. And I have a 2GB data plan. That's a lot of bread...err...talk for your money.

Have you tried to change the setting in your application manager? I've installed Fring few days ago without any problem.

I installed Fring while in Amsterdam without problems - brilliant program. I'm definitely a convert now. . .

If the Certificate has expired then you've probably not downloaded it from the Fring website (where I got my copy), you can get around certificate expired errors by simply changing the date on the phone back 6 months or so, installing, and then changing the date forward again.

Rotateme 2.0 is out soon (less then 24 hours hopefully) but it will be an unsigned application same as the previous version so it will not reach the masses. Too bad.
