I have noticed over the past few days, a lot of new Telecom GSM/UMTS sites have been switched on (well in Auckland anyway). That and along with NZ Communications, we are getting closer to three GSM networks :) I wonder who will be the first to make a live call? Anyone with a Telecom SIM, or an overseas SIM that can roam?

Last night at work in Mission Bush ( http://maps.google.co.nz/?ie=UTF8&ll=-37.208662,174.735661&spn=0.027104,0.054588&z=15 ) I did a search and Telecom NZ showed up as a 3G network. Now this could be my phone getting confused as Vodafone is also 3G (UMTS900) there but more likely is that Telecom is putting 2100MHz UMTS in at least the sector that points at the Steel Mill (large industrial site that Vodafone currently "owns").

I will do some more testing tonight, unless they have turned it off again :-)

Well there ya go. All 3 sectors? The panel facing the Steel Mill is twice the size of the other 2 sectors which I assumed was for capacity. Is it only the Glenbrook one that is getting it out this way, purely to service the Steel Mill?

The mill may be a Vfone corporate client, and I suspect their may be issues with interference with all the dense structures,

Or it maybe to ensure that enough signal radiates beyond the mill in that direction, again big lumps of steel tends to soak up signals

The one with Telecom 2G is on Waiuku Road near Glenbrook Station Road
The one with Telecom 3G is at the Steel Mill (West of Mission Bush Road between Williams Road and Brookside Road)

The Telecom site at the Steel Mill is just west of Mission Bush Road and just north of Whitham Road

On the opposite side of the Telecom site from the Steel Mill Telecom is only 2G so it must only be the sector(s) the Steel Mill is in that got the 2100MHz UMTS treatment

GSM is live In Belfast in CHCH and a city site or two, also Tinwald in Ashburton and Nelson although i couldnt quite find the site.

I will test with my 3g phone tomorrow as well to see if they have 2100mhz going as well.

Telecom have 3G live in Pukekohe now - this goes well against the grain of the "only in the CBD's of the big cities" rumour

The 3G in only the main centres is to under promise and over deliver. From what i have seen the roll out could be more significant than first thought and so far i am liking the GSM 850 signal strength off only a very few live sites in the south island.

NZ Comms is carrying traffic - every time I arrive in NZ my phone roams onto them by default until I hit a coverage hole. It works for inbound/outbound voice, outbound SMS, but inbound SMS seems to be unreliable. EDGE data didn't seem to work either.
