Hi there. I've seen/heard alot of numbers over the years that do stuff when you send txts to them like texting number to 521.
I thought it would be a cool idea for a thread where people can post interesting numbers that do stuff when you txt/call it.

I don't know any other than that one :)

They are called shortcodes and most cost some exorbidant rate (some, $3 - $5 even) to send to...

There are some which are even worse which will CHARGE you to recive a text (sms.ac) comes to mind.

a HUGE proportion of the shortcode numbers are also "inactive" providing a very healthy revenue stream for the mobile provider whom charges away anyway.

IMHO premium rate SMS's should be banned.

I think the OP refers to those special ones, such as one that sends back a SMS with your own number if you don't know it. But if the OP refers to shortcodes for "premium SMS" then I rather not see then listed here...

What on earth is 'premium sms'ing?

Premium SMS are those special numbers that provide services, at special (usually higher) rates. For example a service that you can send a SMS to a number with a town name and receive back a message with weather forecast. Or those services that allows you to "subscribe" to download ringtones three times a week (paying an absurd amount of money each time).

We discussed some of these services here.

Just to touch on premium SMS 'services' like some that have websites.. (incredibly interesting)

The cost of receiving a sms is $3, including GST. The cost for sending a sms will be at the standard rate of $0.20.

You will be sent a series of trivia quiz questions.
Answer 5 questions correctly to qualify for the knock-out final.

Twice a month a new round starts with new prizes, we"ll keep you informed!

And now for the real doosie:
Play this exiting game and have a chance to win:

A Powerplate worth $5

So lets see, for a $5 prize.. thats $3(+0.20)x5=$16 and then you have to actually win.. Then they send you sms messages at a total of $3.20 each twice a month until you figure out how to unsubscribe...
