is it true that if i am for example a westpac customer,and i want to topup my phone using another bank's atm machine,for example,say asb bank,i cannot topup my vodafone mobile phone? because if you want to topup your vodafone mobile via atm,you have to use the same bank machine's atm that your atm card is for? this is so silly if it's true because in my town,there is only a bnz atm machine in the town centre about a 5 minute walk away,and me being a westpac customer,it is a 20minute walk to a westpac atm. why can't you use a bank's atm that isn't your own to topup your vodafone prepay? i mean you can use any banks atm to withdrawl cash and check your balance.

Call Westpac phone banking 0800 172 172 and you can top up your vodafone from your Westpac account anywhere.

This is controlled by the banks not Vodafone!!

Better still, become a KIWI Bank customer and you can top up from the keypad of your Mobile Phone using a new service called HOTLINK.

It works brilliantly and all you need is a KiwiBank account and a Voda mobile with SIM2 (pretty much all of them have that now unless your phone is more than 4 years old).

Grant17, BNZ was the first bank with Hotlink almost two years ago but you have to go 5mins to a BNZ ATM to set it up!

Oh... OK, I wasn't aware of that. I wonder why it's taken so long to roll out to other banks?

Still, having to visit a BNZ ATM to do it is a bit daft...

I was able to activate KiwiBank's Hotlink just using Text Messages. A piece of cake and so much easier to top up now

well why don't vodafone make their hotlink service available to all new zealand banks if it's been around for more than 1 year now. why is it taking so long?and johnr,why wouldn't new zealand banks allow non customers to use their atm's to topup their mobile phones when you can withdrawl money from any atm from any bank?

Because its a premium service. 90% of the time if you put a bank card into a different banks atm machine all you can do is Balance and Withdrawl. If you want to use the 'extra' features that bank provides you have to be their customer.

Hotlink has been offered to majority of NZ banks but its up to the banks to come to the party - they do have to do a bit of work to get it up and running. Plus other banks might have agreements elsewhere, e.g ASB and Telecom

Hotlink is available to any bank. It's the banks that make the decision whether they want to support it.

The reason why you can't top up at another banks ATM is fairly obvious - it's a completely different ATM that isn't hooked directly into the same backend. You obviously fail to understand how complex banking computer systems are, a change such as allowing hotlink could possibly cost somewhere along the lines of $10 - $20 million to develop.
