Interesting. Today I received a friendly, but anonymous, tip on some of the Vodafone New Zealand developments. The tip was related to the coming announcement (before Christmas) of an update to Vodafone's HSDPA network, bringing in 10.8 Mbps maximum download speeds and HSUPA.

Also talked was the deployment of DSL DSLAMs in the Ponsonby exchange as soon as they possibly can.

Now, of course take this with a grain of salt - the person did not identify him/herself and I didn't ask for any confirmation - it was all over IM.

Anyone got more information, that is not bound by NDA?

Sounds great.. A 10.8Mbps HSDPA capable site fed by dual E1's.. I at least hope Vodafone do something about their backhaul first!

Well, the anonymous tipster told me they are "investing heavily" in their backhaul, to support these new speeds.

Unfortunately there are no infos out yet w/o breaching NDA, but I am sure Voda will not stop with the current HSDPA speed and they will increase it as soon the network is ready for it.

Is it just me, or do others find Vodafone's network slow and unreliable. I get pings in the range of 300ms-3000ms and download speeds of 40KB/s (which isn't too bad)

But It drops out if I don't keep a ping running. If they would simply get the ping to a more managable 20-50ms it would be a much more usable service

It also drops out but the software doesn't realise it, and I have to manually reconnect to fix it.

I haven't bothered to phone vodafone as they support line is funnier than iWoz's Joke Line (Sorry just finished reading his book.)

I received a voice call via Voda's network this week and the quality started out bad and rapidly deteriorated to the point where I could not understand the caller, even though I was stopped at some traffic lights only 30 metres from the cell site! He could hear me, but I couldn't hear him.

The coverage along Hillsborough Road is really poor with constant dropouts and you can guarantee that the call will disconnect at a certain spot every time. This should have been fixed years ago

By contrast, using Telecom's EVDO network for mobile data is a pleasure. It connects every time, the PING is 100ms or less and the throughput is excellent. Makes me realise what I have been missing all those years by remaining loyal to Vodafone. As soon as Telecom have GSM, I'm gone!

I used to rely on Vodafone data network before, but I won't these days. As foir voice calls, quite a bit of the time (not all the time of course), the voice quality is horrible, with lots of break ups.

3G or GSM? Vodafone's GSM network is now a joke for calling around Wellington with many areas that suffer dropped calls due to poor network configuration. There are places that have had perfect coverage since from the BellSouth days where you can now routinely suffer from dropped calls, SH2 soundbound from Ngauranga Gorge is still very much a problem even with the Old Hutt Rd/Railyards site. Vodafone swapped out a lot of old panels and their network turned to custard.

These panels were fantastic with great gain and Vodafone dumped them all.. I'm not sure if there are any left in Wgtn now

3G calling however around Wellington is absolutely superb in the areas that have good coverage, there are now parts of Wgtn that now have 3G coverage and no GSM coverage which is rather ironic. The people in Houghton Bay now have 3G coverage but still no GSM coverage 10 years after BellSouth promised a site! :-)
