Relative is taking a trip to the US and hope to use my Vodafone HSPDA (Huawei E800) on ATT network there.

I have a spare VFNZ card here, so ... this is good news as it will save her a lot of money to use a local carrier rather than data roaming. Freitasm recommended this approach when I mentioned the two Telecom options my relative relative been presented with.

But: does the Huawei E800 need to be unlocked for use with ATT? Or can we just pick up a SIM card on arrival?

Would appreciate clues from anyone with local knowledge

Unless Vodafone have changed their policy data cards have never been SIM locked. You will just be able to put a local SIM in it on arrival.

sbiddle and freitasm: thanks heaps!

i've had a mad google over the last couple of days looking for this info - seems that in the US the huawei e800 name is used for a cellphone, so not much luck. except here.

geekzone has been a huge help in giving us a few pieces of info for my relative to travel with - and we very much appreciate your quick and helpful responses

cheers!

You must install the Vodafone software. Then you have to configure a new APN using the AT&T settings because that's the one the AT&T SIM card is authorised to connect to.

The AT&T settings are:

APN: wap.cingular
User: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (case sensetive)
Pwd: CINGULAR1 (case sensetive)

Well, what do we know? I bought an AT&T SIM card a couple of hours ago and my Vodafone-branded XU870 data card refuses to work with - "Please insert correct SIM card".

Lucky the Pocket PC is working fine. We have wireless everywhere here at the hotel and conference centre, so I am using the SIM card on my Pocket PC for push e-mail, Twitter, etc. $25 for the SIM card with activation, less $19.95 for 5 GB data. Good deal.
