Change of job and I need a new cellphone since my current one belong to my employer (as does the number). Since my current phone is a TCL one I thought I would stick with them so that 1) have a better choice of phone # and 2) integrated billing (I have triple service from TCL now)

Went down to the retail store to get the phone. No - sorry we can't sign you up for mobile - only business customers can get a mobile from TCL. This seemed a bit strange so I pointed them to their web site where under Home Plan there are pages on their mobile offering.  I then asked them to call their call centre to check. And after some time on hold and navigating the IVR, they got to somebody who said, yes we can do mobile for retail customers but it's done over the phone and the phone is shipped to the customer!

This is probably not a big deal but given that the plans that Vodafone and TCL offer are the same, it's actually better in some respects to get a TCL 029 phone since you have a much better choice of number.  If you want you can get your mobile number to be the same as your home number (I didn't).  Anyway got back home, called the call center and signed up for what I wanted and the phone will be shipped to me in a few days.

I wish their retail store, which is really a customer facing outlet, knew what all TCL services were.

It's all a bit stupid and pointless really:

1)  The phone is the same (for business and retail customers)
2)  The provider is the same
3)  The call plans are similar (if not exactly the same)

Is it too much to ask that they would let you take a phone away with you and sort out the paperwork later?

This sort of pointless bureaucracy really does make you wonder sometimes...

Agreed. If the Wellington retail store is the flagship customer outlet (certainly no shortage of Macs and flatscreens there), then it should be able to display, demo and sell all TCL retail products. Yet another case of a good idea with an imperfect implementation. I contrast that with the Vodafone retail store in Wellington which, while smaller and less flashy, allows you to try all the products they sell.

Just got the phone couriered to me. The phone number that I had requested and confirmed several times was not the one assigned to the account!  But to be fair. I called TCL customer support and they were able to change the number on the fly - well I waited on hold until they asked Vodafone to do it.

I got a K800i - it's packaged Vodafone with Vodafone Live and comes in a Vodafone box.  No M2 card though - wonder if that's how SE package them now or how Vodafone does. My K750i came with a Memory Stick Duo
