Just over a month ago I asked in my blog where was the 25 Mbps upgrade TCL promised for December 2007.

Not to my surprise we did not get any official comment neither on the blog itself or here where there's a TelstraClear account which they could use to let people know things.

Today I found out on Stuff that the upgrade is not coming until mid 2008 for Wellington:

TelstraClear expects to offer 25 megabit per second broadband connections to customers of its Wellington cable network by mid-year.

The lightning-fast 25Mbps plans should be available in Christchurch next month, says spokesman Chris Mirams.

TelstraClear had originally promised the faster broadband plans last year. Mr Mirams says the upgrade was held up by the availability of equipment that has only recently become available, and which arrived in New Zealand shortly after Christmas.

A bit annoying I would say now that it seems with unbundling, Orcon(?) is announcing 25Mbs/2Mbs for ADSL in Auckland. Still good cable should be better than DSL service.

As an aside I went to www.vudu.com (video on demand box/service in the US) to see if technically it would work here. Not sure they would do IP checking but their online speed test said that my speed was at tier 1 - fast enough to do realtime video (rather than buffer into their STB). Of course speed tests don't always mirror reality.

And I wonder what is happening with the Digital Video upgrade??? Seems like everything is delayed.. :(

Even when 25Mbps is available on DSL you'll need to sit on top of the local exchange to obtain anything like 25Mbps. It is well known that the TNZL copper network will not handle the 25Mbps further than 1KM from the exchange also dependant on load sharing of the exchange too).

At least TCL's 25Mbps (when it eventually arrives) will be available over the whole network. Not restricted to 1KM of the headend

A. This is a feature of Copper rather than something unique with Telecom. Cabnets should hopefully reduce the loop length and improve DSL2+ speeds. However backhaul issues discussed here are issues which are not unique to DSL.

B. TCL's network may offer more universial speeds but the network type in question, but as you can see, coverage compared to DSL or alternatives is significantly smaller. Coverage in say, Auckland where you may get upto 24mbps on DSL2+ is better than 0 because there is no network.

Anyway - back on topic which is TCL 25mbps upgrade.
