I emailed Jodine Laing late last night regarding the new broadband plan, and check to see if one (with only cable internet and saturn digital tv) can also upgrade to new broadband internet without having to take up the phone service (triple-service).

And i got an email back from Jodine, saying that she had forwarded my query to the team and will be contacted later. Well soon and sure enough, I got a call from Jeff, and basically follow up with me with my queries, and was told that I may be able upgrade to the new plan without having to take up the phone service (kudos!), and also had few questions answered, like whether there will be a new digital decoder (sure enough a S-video output decoder is in testing for more advanced customers, a PVR is in testing but proved to be a bit more complex, however I was told it will be better than MySky), question regarding badly pixelated images from some channels, perhaps to do with double compression from Sky (once) then from (TelstraClear), however I was also told, that some channels TelstraClear receives them first then rebroadcast to Sky. So could possibly be my cable signal strength is not optimal. Then lastly, to do with MCE, queried/suggested about having TelstraClear partnering with Microsoft to deliver EPG data, probably will never happened but Jeff said he will give me this other guy's contact (from wellington?) who has trained all retail stores around NZ on how to operate/give demo on MCE. Jeff said this guy has been able to use XMLTV and could possibly be of help to some extend.

So yeah, good to hear that TelstraClear is willing to be flexible with a few of their products, that's the service I like. To my amaze, I called TelstraClear to query about whether I am able to access the online customer service (Online bill/account service) yet, and within 10mins (okay still not the greatest but it is definitely faster than the previous 30mins wait)... and was given apology regarding there are high queue and demand on call centre, and offered to get my name and details and my queries and will get back to me within 24hours, I think that's good as my query is not urgent.

Overall, i felt that TelstraClear is gaining back on track with good service, okay it's progressing slowly towards the good service... I hope TelstraClear will realised this and improve further.

Woohoo!

I'm sold!

I got a call back from TelstraClear (fabulous call centre lady). I am on the way to HS20GB 2Mbps/2Mbps for $69.95 with no monthly modem rental!

i'm actually paying less for more compare to my current plan! Woohoo! $0.95 saving! I can buy a Mac for lunch each month!

I actually felt this is a superb customer service, they call you back as soon as possible and willing to be flexible to make a sale with their product! That's good!

So, I made a plan for my home, few months later I will get second digital decoder, and possibly 2 additional analog decoder, and a World TV add-on for my mother. Of course what's damn about is that each decoder connection incur an installation. Then perhaps before the end of the year or early 2007, totally switch our phone service over to TelstraClear and get free porting service too.

Wow! I'd then would be telecom-free!

Wish i could consolidate my vodafone accounts with TelstraClear and have single bill... mmmm maybe I could try email Vodafone NZ/TelstraClear to check about this.

TCL have reversed their policy they introduced last November where you could only get a cable modem if you switched to their phone service which is good news.

You should really try a VoIP provider if you want cheap calls, quality over cable is superb.

I haven't use any VoIP applications/services before, and am always a bit sceptic about the service and quality.

How easy will it be when using VoIP over cable internet? can I continue to use my WDECT phones that i recently got? What are the pros and cons, and things that I need to be aware of? How easy to configure in terms of working with a network router?

(hope I'm not coming across as a total green greedy noob.)

Nah I'm not meaning Skype I'm talking about real VoIP!

At present the only way to get an incoming number in NZ is to use iTalk (only problem is they are part of Callplus!) and for $9.95 per month you get an 09 phone number for incoming calls, free calls to the 09 area and 5c per min calls around NZ and to many other destinations. If you sign up with somebody like mynetfone you can pay no montly fee, have no DDI number, but just get cheap calls.

I've got a few SIP VoIP phones at home that just plug straight into your router, I've also got a couple of Linksys PAP2's which allow you to plug a regular phone such as your DECT phone straight in and make calls.

Voice quality is dependant on many things but the biggest factor is the internet connection you have, hence why TCL cable is so great. I use the ulaw voice codec (ISDN standard) for both my iTalk and Australia mynetfone connections and get awesome call quality. I could probably drop you a phone around to have a play with at some stage if you're keen.

Numbers in other regions where due a year ago.. But you have to remember this is Callplus/Slingshot..

Lucky you... I called TelstraClear today to clarify my Account PIN problem and confirm my account upgrade (since I've changed my account two weeks ago), and instead of the usual "please hold, or fax us at..." I got a person, who was nice and asked for my phone number, mobile number and what I wanted to talk about, promising to have someone call me back soon... No such call yet.

Checked my usage meter and I've been switched to the 20GB plan automatically (I was already on the HS 10GB plan).
20GB is probably overkill for me so I'll probably downgrade and use the money I save to subscribe to the digital TV option.
Funny, I emailed customer support to see if they had any intention of releasing decoders with better quality outputs and they said that since they only just released digital TV last year they had no such plans at this stage. Pffft....yeah right. I guess you just have to get hold of the right people! :) I hope everyone gets the chance to upgrade without too much expense when they do become available.

verbally, Jeff confirmed that S-video decoder will be out later the year for prosumers, and PVR decoder will be end of this year or next year as it is more complex.

I came home and switched IP, took 1 hour on the phone to get Paradise.net to sort their sh*t out. later, it works, but when queried with the helpdesk guy, he said he isn't sure what's up, but said they gave their IP despatch system a refresh, which later the connection works.

from my network status, there are a lot of outgoing traffic sent, but no incoming traffic received. then after that while, it's like the floodgate just opened, then the internet is in!! They could save themselves time by just looking at their IP dispatch server for a refresh, instead of insisting telling customer what to do.

this guy told me ping my ip address and said he can ping me, and i can ping my ip, but i told him the reason why i get reply from my IP is because i'm pinging myself, and told him that i am also skilled as network administrator, and when I said i can't get a reply from the Gateway, there got to be something wrong with server.

I can access internet this morning before ip change, after i changed ip, i can't which could suggest that their end is not working correctly.... sheesh

Anyhow, Mauricio, i hope you get your phone call tomorrow. otherwise give Jodine Laing an email. hehe.

You can't (easily) migrate mobile numbers yet from Voda to TCL, but if you're OK with an 029 number then no problem...

Effective today the one-buck-per-month-cheaper-than-telecom versions of the new ADSL plans are also supposed to be available. Are these auto upgrades too? I didn't notice any difference on speedometers.
