For those with Sky TV you are probably watching a blank screen. Unofficial word at the moment from several sources is that the Optus B1 satellite has lost all ground contact and is porbably dead. This satellite has been running on a backup processor since May last year after the main processor failed and is due to be repalced with Optus D1 within a couple of months. There was a very high risk of this processor failing as well and it obviously has..

Obviously more news to come...

Except TCL still get numerous channels from Sky!

There is apparently an agreement still in place between Sky & SingTel to use space on Optus C1 should B1 fail however this would only be several channels due to C1 being full. If you have had Sky installed or a PVR installed since November you have a dual LNB pointing at C1 and B1 so there is a possibility of service being restored on C1 within 24 hours. For everybody else you're just out of luck - I bet Sky TV shares will be suspecnded about now! :-)

Wouldn't be so bad, but I can't watch the 30 hours of programs I have saved up on MySky! "Can't playback programs when there is no satellite signal". Would that be for technical reasons, or just to keep you from taking the box to someone else's house and  watching it there?

Official word on the outage can be found at http://skytv.co.nz/. Although that is a dead-end page, the rest of the site is available, eg http://www.skytv.co.nz/index.cfm?pageid=415.

Glad I have a backup machine and some DVDs!

Oh that poor haemmoraging sky website!

Anyway, more info on what is affected and it's channels are here

DO NOT slug off SkyTV, they are probably feeling pretty down about it tonght (and they are my neighbours)

I hope they live through this, It's not their fault and they have been installing dual mode dishes for some time now.

There is still a radiolink feed off Optus B1 but the processor is Kaput.

Update: the satellite is now communicating correctly with Optus ground stations.

Optus is currently doing a re-pointing manoeuvre, which should be completed by about midnight.
