not serious about doing it, just wondered if its possible.

Anyways

With the new Telecom freedom thing ($10 mobile - home), am I able to use my mobile as a modem to connect to my dsl connection at home (like an fxo port on an ata for voip)?

Does that make sense?

I don't think it would work, the mobile phone can't be used as a voice modem, only data modem.

Aren't CSD calls on Telecom charged at normal mobile rates? If so then theoretically you could use an 027 device that supports CSD, dial into a modem connected to server running a DSL connection and surf the net at a superfast 14.4k!

Your idea may work - but why anybody would want to actually do it escapes me because of speed it would crawl along at.

I didn't even consider this - the OP talks about VoIP and CSD max at 14.4Kbps, wouldn't be usable at all, so why bother?

Still curious to know if it works, I used to abuse my old Bellsouth "Off peak advantage" for that as it didn't seem to differentiate data and voice calls.

Even though a whole 14.4Kbps, It could still be useful, Someone needs to make a test call and let us know! (Unless CSD data cables for Samsungs n391's are cheap?)

Telecom do know the difference between voice and CSD. CDMA uses service options which dictate the billing - CSD and voice use different service options.

CSD over CDMA is also used to provide encrypted voice calls (mobile to modem) - black helicopter sort of stuff.

My offpeak advantage didn't let me do data! I feel ripped off! :-) I wonder if because I originally had the data overlay in place the billing system knew to charge me the CSD rate rather than charging them at the same price as voice?

paradoxsm: Currently back in wet Auckland, doing some large amount of Mobile network and VoIP testing (Now I can for only $110, 2x $49 data promo's)

I did something even cooler yesterday - I hooked my old T610 up to Asterisk via Bluetooth so it appears as a trunk. Incoming calls on the mobile get transferred via Audio Gateway to Asterisk and I can also specify my mobile as an outgoing trunk in Asterisk! Beats paying $1000 for a GSM trunk unit! Unfortunately I can't recommend it as being a stable solution yet - I managed to break it when I changed Bluetooth dongles to try and get better range and now it won't work!

I like that... Very cool,. T610's are so cheap and old now i'd just shove it in there an let it be.

But I still have my faithful "Tellular" (motorola hardware based) trunk unit... Couldn't put that old baby out of service!

I heard sky had an 025 trunk unit the same as my old beast (nautech) as they were so tight in making calls, it was cheaper for them to have this on "Go Free Local" where all mobile calls after 6PM are 15c a minute.

My MobileDataOverlay and Free Faxmail was taken off me just the other day as they had to do some renumbering. Drat.
